Keeping an open mind to learning

In this week's Education section of The Age Brenton does a wonderful job of speaking back to John Howard's recent degrading remarks about the English teaching profession. As an Advocacy Group we have been thinking hard about how to encourage the media to print a range of voices in response to these attacks as they inevitably come. It seems that our work, thinking and conversations with journalists over the last couple of months are beginning to pay off.

Congrats, Brenton. You succeed in speaking softly but with power, with reason and with force, but not arrogance or spite.

Yes, it was a great piece. Marvellous first line: "English teaching is about 'becoming'." A most succinct yet multi-layered answer to the right wing attacks on the subject in recent times. And also a provocation to all of us to evaluate our own professional identities and teaching practices.
